The location of temperature controls on a gas water heater and an electric water heater will differ. Use the images above and below to see exactly where the location of the controls are.

An Electric Hot Water Heating Element with Temperature Control can be adjusted under 2 small panels on the side of the heater. The gas water heater is much easier as a small knob at the bottom of the tank can be turned ever slightly to change the temperature.

Please note that turning the water heater temperature higher can cause scalding so use extreme caution. A higher temperature on your water heater can also increase your electric bill and or gas bill.

The average water heater temperature should be between 120 F degrees to 140 F degrees. 160 degrees fahrenheit temperature setting would be considered a HOT setting.

The purpose of this page is to show WHERE THE WATER HEATER TEMPERATURE CONTROLS ARE LOCATED to change the temperature on your water heater. To see HOW TO CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE ON YOUR WATER HEATER, this link will show the easy and safe way to change the temp on your electric water heater.

Caution: Always flip the circuit breaker to the water heater before changing the temperature! RISK OF SHOCK!

On an Electric Hot Water Heating Element with Temperature Control, the temperature can be changed under the 2 panels where the heating elements are located.

On a gas water heater the temperature can be changed on the bottom of the tank where the temperature dial is located.
